Biography
Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn was a Russian novelist, historian, and Soviet dissident. He is best known for his works exposing the brutality of the Soviet forced labor camp system in the Gulag Archipelago and One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich. Solzhenitsyn was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1970, but was forced into exile by the Soviet authorities in 1974. He lived in the United States for almost 20 years before returning to Russia in 1994. Throughout his career, he fearlessly condemned totalitarianism and defended human rights.
