Anita Brookner was a British novelist and art historian. Born in London to Polish-Jewish immigrants, she pursued a career in academia and taught art history at the Courtauld Institute of Art. In her mid-fifties, Brookner began writing fiction and published her first novel, 'A Start in Life,' which won the prestigious Booker Prize in 1984. Known for her introspective and melancholic portrayals of loneliness and solitude, she authored over two dozen novels exploring themes of isolation and emotional complexities.
