Anita Brookner was a British novelist and art historian. Born in London to Polish-Jewish immigrants, she pursued a career in academia and taught art history at the Courtauld Institute of Art. In her mid-fifties, Brookner began writing fiction and published her first novel, 'A Start in Life,' which won the prestigious Booker Prize in 1984.
