Emperor Akihito, born on December 23, 1933, is a member of the Japanese imperial family and the 125th emperor of Japan. He ascended to the Chrysanthemum Throne in 1989 following the death of his father, Emperor Hirohito. Akihito is known for his efforts to bring the Japanese monarchy closer to the people, promoting goodwill and reconciliation both domestically and internationally. He became the first Japanese emperor to abdicate in over two centuries in 2019, passing the throne to his son, Emperor Naruhito.
