Václav Havel was a Czech writer, philosopher, and dissident who played a leading role in the Velvet Revolution which peacefully brought an end to communist rule in Czechoslovakia in 1989. Havel served as the last President of Czechoslovakia from 1989 to 1992 and as the first President of the Czech Republic from 1993 to 2003.
