Antonio Gramsci was an Italian Marxist theorist, politician, and writer. He is best known for his theory of cultural hegemony which examines how the ruling class maintains its power over society through cultural institutions and ideologies. Gramsci was a founding member and leader of the Italian Communist Party and was imprisoned by the Fascist regime for his political activities.
