About Black Kettle
Black Kettle, also known as Moke-tavato, was a prominent leader of the Southern Cheyenne people during the mid-19th century. He advocated for peace and cooperation with the United States government, seeking to protect his people amidst the escalating tensions and violence of the Indian Wars. Despite his efforts to maintain peaceful relations, his camp at Sand Creek was tragically attacked by U.S. troops in the infamous Sand Creek Massacre of 1864, leading to the death of many Cheyenne, including women and children. Black Kettle continued to strive for peace and negotiated various treaties before eventually perishing in the Washita Massacre in 1868.
