About Bodhidharma
Bodhidharma was a Buddhist monk who lived during the 5th or 6th century. He is traditionally credited as the transmitter of Chan Buddhism to China, known as Zen in Japan. Little contemporary biographical information on Bodhidharma is extant, but legends about him abound. According to these, he traveled to China from South India, where he meditated facing a wall for nine years at the Shaolin Temple. Bodhidharma's teachings focused on meditation and the direct attainment of enlightenment, rejecting reliance on scripture or ritual.
