Booker T. Washington (1856-1915) was an influential African American educator, author, and adviser to presidents of the United States. Born into slavery, he became a leading voice for the African American community during the Reconstruction Era. Washington was the founder of the Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute in Alabama, now known as Tuskegee University, where he promoted vocational education to empower African Americans through practical skills and economic self-reliance.
