Carl Clinton Van Doren was an American critic and Pulitzer Prize-winning biographer. He was born in 1885 and received his Ph.D. in literature from Columbia University. Van Doren taught at several universities and was known for his critical writings on notable American authors. He won the Pulitzer Prize for Biography in 1939 for his work on Benjamin Franklin.
