Carly Patterson is a former artistic gymnast from the United States who rose to fame with her success at the 2004 Athens Olympics. Born in 1988 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Patterson began her gymnastics training at an early age and quickly showed promise in the sport. Her breakthrough came at the Olympics where she won the all-around gold medal, becoming the first American woman to achieve this since 1984. Patterson inspired many young athletes and retired from competitive gymnastics in 2006.
